Conversation & American Culture

Course description

This course develops students’ conversational English skills through the exploration of current events, social topics, and cultural aspects of life in the United States. Students have opportunities to expand their pronunciation, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and communication strategies while exploring American culture and everyday interactions. Through discussions, authentic materials, and real-life scenarios, students practice using English in academic, personal, and social communication contexts.

Course Learning Outcomes

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the many different aspects of American culture such as greetings, gestures, dating, tipping, safety laws, health, holidays, education, shopping and values. As students are introduced to certain topics, they will be able to converse and convey their personal opinions, argue a point of view, and share and discuss experiences.

Students will be able to understand and make inferences from conversations and talks regarding academic and social topics. Clear English pronunciation, including stress and intonation will be emphasized and demonstrated through using authentic materials to stimulate students' oral communication skills.

Performance Objectives

Throughout the Intensive English Program, students have opportunities to:

Practice communicating in English through conversations, discussions, and real-life interactions.
Develop pronunciation, stress, intonation, and speaking fluency through guided practice.
Express opinions, share experiences, discuss ideas, and explore different points of view.
Explore common American expressions, gestures, and conversational practices.
Examine cultural topics, including social customs, holidays, education, values, and everyday life in the United States.
Practice communication skills through practical situations such as shopping, dining, healthcare, transportation, and social events.
Develop intercultural communication skills by comparing American culture with their own cultural experiences.
Discuss current events, social issues, and academic topics using appropriate vocabulary and communication strategies.
Gain experience participating in roleplays, group discussions, and collaborative activities.
Apply communication and study skills that support continued development in ESL and college-level courses.
