Course description

This course develops students’ English communication skills for professional and business environments. Students have opportunities to strengthen business writing, formal vocabulary, and oral communication skills through workplace-focused activities, including presentations, discussions, roleplays, and authentic business scenarios. The course provides practice using English in a variety of professional and global business communication contexts.

Course Learning Outcomes

The objective of this course is to introduce students to problem solving, critical thinking and professional communication through integrated skills. The emphasis is on how to use formal vocabulary and expressions in business-related environments both orally and in written form. Students develop productive skills through group/pair work, presentations, discussions and roleplays.

The communicative functions include practicing moderating skills, form-filling, writing cover letters and resumes, discussing global issues that affect the business world, developing timemanagement skills, creating action plans, decision-making, placing orders, participating in meetings, giving formal presentations, reading and discussing job advertisements, and analyzing different sales situations. To this end, extensive pair and group work, listening comprehension exercises, reading, and writing is carried out. Students will be exposed to simulated business situations and introduced to authentic business-related materials.

Students will be able to demonstrate their abilities to communicate in a variety of business settings and interact in English using comprehensive business skills.

Performance Objectives

Throughout the Intensive English Program, students have opportunities to:

  • Practice communicating in professional and business settings using appropriate vocabulary, expressions, and communication strategies.

  • Gain experience participating in workplace interactions, including meetings, discussions, negotiations, and presentations.

  • Apply formal and informal language registers appropriately in professional written and spoken communication.

  • Practice writing professional business documents, including emails, memos, reports, letters, cover letters, and resumes.

  • Develop reading and listening strategies for understanding business-related materials and identifying key information.

  • Practice expressing opinions, making recommendations, discussing trends, and explaining causes, effects, advantages, and disadvantages in business contexts.

  • Develop critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and time-management skills through simulated workplace scenarios.

  • Gain experience interpreting and presenting business information using charts, graphs, statistics, and reports.

  • Build confidence through professional communication activities, roleplays, presentations, and collaborative practice.

  • Apply business English skills and study strategies that support continued development in ESL and college-level courses.
