IEP (Intensive English Program)

Course description

The Intensive English Program (IEP) is a six-level English language program designed to support students as they develop English skills from foundational levels through advanced academic communication. Levels range from Pre-Beginner (ABC) through High-Advanced and include instruction in conversation, pronunciation, grammar, reading, writing, and academic communication. Through interactive classes, pair and small-group activities, and individualized teacher support, students have opportunities to strengthen their English skills for academic study, TOEFL® preparation, and professional goals. The program provides a structured pathway for continued development in speaking, reading, writing, listening, and academic language skills.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students are introduced to basic grammar, vocabulary development, dictionary use and pronunciation of the phonetic alphabet.

Students focus on writing basic to complex sentences, interpersonal communication skills, intermediate grammar, pronunciation and writing skills.

Students focus on more intensive practice in reading, writing and speaking; fluency in mechanics; and reading longer, more complex articles. Students learn high-intermediate grammar and practice in discussion groups. hey start to prepare for the TOEFL or TOEIC examinations and college or university courses.

Performance Objectives

Throughout the Intensive English Program, students have opportunities to:

Practice communicating in English in everyday, academic, and professional contexts.
Develop pronunciation, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency through structured language practice.
Apply English grammar structures, vocabulary, and communication strategies in spoken and written activities.
Strengthen reading skills through identifying main ideas, supporting details, and meaning from context.
Gain experience writing organized paragraphs, essays, and academic assignments using appropriate language conventions.
Participate in conversations, discussions, presentations, and collaborative activities.
Develop critical thinking skills through reading, writing, discussions, and problem-solving activities.
Practice academic strategies, including note-taking, dictionary use, research skills, and test preparation techniques.
Build academic English skills that support preparation for higher-level English study, TOEFL® preparation, and college or university coursework.
Develop greater independence and confidence through continued practice using English for educational, personal, and professional purposes.
